Leo is cleaning his room. He picks up some clothes from the floor and puts them away in the wardrobe. He puts down a box on the desk and takes out some old papers. He throws away the papers he does not need. Before dinner, he remembers a library book and decides to bring it back the next day.

💡 Notice the Pattern

Using pick up, put down and put away

These phrasal verbs describe simple actions with objects. Pick up means lift something, put down means place it somewhere, and put away means return it to its usual place. With a pronoun, we usually put the pronoun in the middle: pick it up, put it down, put it away.

  • Pick up the keys. / Pick them up.
  • Put down the bag. / Put it down.
